Matthew 17

Read Matthew 17 in clear, relatable modern language.

The Transfiguration

“Six days later, Jesus took Peter, James, and John up a high mountain to chill privately.”

“While they were up there, Jesus’ appearance changed, His face started glowing like the sun, and His clothes turned bright white.”

“Then Moses and Elijah showed up and started talking with Jesus.”

“Peter said, ‘Lord, this is dope! Let us set up three shelters, one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.’”

“While Peter was still talking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, ‘This is My Son, whom I love, and I am pleased with Him. Listen to Him!’”

“When the disciples heard the voice, they fell flat on the ground, scared out of their minds.”

“But Jesus came over, touched them, and said, ‘Get up. Do not be scared.’”

“When they looked up, they did not see anyone except Jesus.”

“As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus said, ‘Do not tell anyone what you saw until the Son of Man has risen from the dead.’”

“The disciples asked, ‘Why do the teachers of the law say Elijah has to come first?’”

“Jesus said, ‘Elijah does come and restores all things.’”

“‘But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him. They treated him bad, and they are going to do the same to the Son of Man.’”

“Then the disciples realized He was talking about John the Baptist.”

Jesus Heals a Demon-possessed Boy

“When they came back to the crowd, a man came up to Jesus, dropped to his knees, and said?”

“‘Lord, have mercy on my son. He has seizures and suffers a lot. Sometimes he falls into the fire or water.’”

“‘I brought him to Your disciples, but they could not heal him.’”

“Jesus said, ‘You all faithless and twisted generation! How long do I have to put up with you all, Bring the boy here.’”

“Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy. He was healed instantly.”

“The disciples asked Jesus privately, ‘Why could we not drive it out?’”

“Jesus said, ‘Because your faith is too small. If you had faith the size of a mustard seed, you could tell a mountain to move, and it would move. Nothing would be impossible for you.’”

But this kind does not come out except through prayer and fasting.

Jesus Predicts His Death Again

“When they gathered in Galilee, Jesus said, ‘The Son of Man is about to be handed over to people,’”

“‘They are going to kill Him, but on the third day, He will be raised to life.’ The disciples were heartbroken.”

Paying the Temple Tax

“When they got to Capernaum, the temple tax collectors came to Peter and asked, ‘Does your teacher pay the temple tax?’”

“Peter said, ‘Yeah, He does.’ When Peter got home, Jesus asked him, ‘What do you think, Simon, Do kings tax their own kids or other people?’”

“Peter said, ‘Other people.’ Jesus said, ‘Then the children are exempt.’”

“‘But to avoid offending them, go to the lake, throw out your line, and the first fish you catch will have a coin in its mouth. Take it and pay the tax for both of us.’”
