Mark 5

Read Mark 5 in clear, relatable modern language.

Jesus Heals a Man with a Demon

They came to the other side of the sea, into the region of the Gerasenes.

As soon as Jesus stepped out the boat, a man with an unclean spirit came out from the tombs to meet Him.

This man lived among the tombs, and nobody could hold him down, not even with chains.

They had tried many times to bind him with shackles and chains, but he would tear them apart and break them to pieces. Nobody was strong enough to control him.

Night and day, he stayed in the tombs and in the mountains, crying out and cutting himself with stones.

When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran up and dropped down before Him.

He shouted loud, “What do You want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God, I beg You, do not torment me!”

Because Jesus had already told him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit.”

Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” He said, “My name is Legion, because we are many.”

And he kept begging Jesus not to send them out of the region.

There was a large herd of pigs feeding nearby on the hillside.

The demons begged Him, “Send us into the pigs, let us go into them.”

Jesus gave them permission. The unclean spirits came out and went into the pigs, and the whole herd, about two thousand, rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned.

The ones tending the pigs ran off and reported it in the city and countryside, and people came to see what happened.

They came to Jesus and saw the man who had been possessed, sitting there, clothed and in his right mind, the same man who had the Legion. And they were afraid.

Those who saw it explained everything, what happened to the demon-possessed man and the pigs.

Then people started begging Jesus to leave their region.

As He was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed begged to go with Him.

But Jesus did not allow it. He said, “Go home to your people and tell them everything the Lord has done for you, and how He had mercy on you.”

So the man went out and started telling in the Decapolis everything Jesus had done for him, and everybody was amazed.

Jesus Heals a Woman and Raises a Girl

When Jesus crossed back over the sea, a large crowd gathered around Him near the shore.

Then one of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus, came. When he saw Jesus, he fell at His feet

and begged Him hard, saying, “My little daughter is about to die. Please come lay Your hands on her so she can be healed and live.”

So Jesus went with him, and a big crowd followed, pressing in on Him from all sides.

There was a woman who had been bleeding for twelve years.

She had suffered under many doctors and spent everything she had, but instead of getting better, she got worse.

She heard about Jesus, came up behind Him in the crowd, and touched His cloak.

She kept saying, “If I can just touch His clothes, I will be healed.”

Right then, the bleeding stopped, and she felt in her body that she was healed from that sickness.

Immediately Jesus felt power go out from Him. He turned around in the crowd and said, “Who touched My clothes?”

His disciples said, “You see this crowd pressing in on You, and You are asking who touched You?”

But He kept looking around to see who did it.

The woman, knowing what happened to her, came in fear and trembling, fell down before Him, and told Him the whole truth.

He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace and be healed from your suffering.”

While He was still speaking, people came from Jairus’ house saying, “Your daughter has died. Why bother the Teacher anymore?”

But Jesus ignored what they said and told Jairus, “Do not be afraid. Just believe.”

He did not let anyone follow Him except Peter, James, and John.

When they came to the house, He saw confusion, people crying and wailing loud.

He went in and said, “Why all this noise and crying, The child is not dead, but asleep.”

They laughed at Him.

He put them all outside, took the child’s father and mother and those with Him, and went in where the child was. He took her by the hand and said, “Little girl, I say to you, get up.”

Immediately the girl got up and started walking, she was twelve years old. And they were completely shocked.

He gave them strict orders not to let anyone know about this, and He told them to give her something to eat.
