Urban Word Bible
Mark 16
Read Mark 16 in clear, relatable modern language.
The Resurrection
1 When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so they could go anoint Jesus.
2 Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they went to the tomb.
3 They were saying to each other, “Who is going to roll the stone away for us from the entrance?”
4 But when they looked up, they saw the stone had already been rolled away, it was a big one.
5 When they went into the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe, and they were shook.
6 He said to them, “Do not be afraid. You are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, the One who was crucified. He has risen, He is not here. Look, this is where they laid Him.
7 Now go tell His disciples, and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee. You will see Him there just like He told you.’”
8 They came out and ran from the tomb, trembling and confused. They did not say anything to anyone at first, because they were afraid.
Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene
9 After He rose early on the first day of the week, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, the one He had driven seven demons out of.
10 She went and told those who had been with Him, who were mourning and crying.
11 But when they heard He was alive and that she had seen Him, they did not believe it.
Jesus Appears to Two Disciples
12 After that, He appeared in a different form to two of them walking in the countryside.
13 They went back and told the others, but they did not believe them either.
Jesus Appears to the Eleven
14 Later, He appeared to the eleven while they were sitting at the table. He checked them for their unbelief and hard hearts, because they did not believe those who had seen Him after He rose.
15 Then He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.
16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.
17 And these signs will follow those who believe: in My name they will drive out demons, they will speak in new tongues,
18 they will pick up snakes, and if they drink anything deadly, it will not harm them. They will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”
The Ascension
19 After the Lord Jesus spoke to them, He was taken up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God.
20 Then they went out and preached everywhere, and the Lord worked with them, confirming the word through the signs that followed.
