Luke 22

Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus

1 The Festival of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was getting close.

2 The chief priests and scribes were looking for a way to take Jesus out, but they were scared of the people.

3 Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, one of the twelve.

4 He went and talked with the chief priests and officers about how he could hand Jesus over to them.

5 They were glad and agreed to give him money.

6 So he agreed and started looking for the right moment to betray Jesus when the crowd was not around.

The Last Supper

7 Then came the day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed.

8 Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go prepare the Passover for us so we can eat.”

9 They asked, “Where do You want us to prepare it?”

10 He said, “As you enter the city, you will see a man carrying a jar of water. Follow him to the house he enters.

11 Tell the owner, ‘The Teacher says, where is the guest room where I can eat the Passover with My disciples,’

12 He will show you a large upper room, already set up. Prepare it there.”

13 They went and found everything just like He said and prepared the Passover.

14 When the hour came, Jesus reclined at the table with the apostles.

15 He said, “I have really wanted to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.

16 I am telling you, I will not eat it again until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”

17 Then He took a cup, gave thanks, and said, “Take this and share it among yourselves.

18 I am telling you, I will not drink from the fruit of the vine again until the kingdom of God comes.”

19 Then He took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body given for you, do this in remembrance of Me.”

20 In the same way, after supper He took the cup and said, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is poured out for you.

21 But the one who is going to betray Me is with Me at this table.

22 The Son of Man will go as it has been determined, but woe to the one who betrays Him.”

23 Then they started asking each other which one of them would do this.

Who Is the Greatest

24 A dispute also broke out among them about which of them should be considered the greatest.

25 Jesus said, “The kings of the nations rule over people, and those in authority call themselves benefactors.

26 But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who leads like the one who serves.

27 Who is greater, the one at the table or the one serving, Is it not the one at the table, But I am among you as one who serves.

28 You are the ones who have stayed with Me through My trials.

29 And I assign to you a kingdom, just like My Father assigned one to Me,

30 so you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.”

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial

31 “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you like wheat.

32 But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith will not fail. And when you turn back, strengthen your brothers.”

33 Peter said, “Lord, I am ready to go with You to prison and even to death.”

34 Jesus said, “I am telling you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you even know Me.”

35 Then He asked them, “When I sent you out without money, bag, or sandals, did you lack anything?” They said, “Nothing.”

36 He said, “But now, if you have a money bag, take it, and also a bag. If you do not have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one.

37 It is written: ‘He was counted with the lawless,’ and I am telling you this must be fulfilled in Me. Yes, what is written about Me is reaching its fulfillment.”

38 They said, “Lord, look, here are two swords.” He replied, “That is enough.”

Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives

39 Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and His disciples followed Him.

40 When He got there, He said, “Pray so you will not fall into temptation.”

41 He pulled away from them about a stone’s throw, knelt down, and prayed,

42 “Father, if You are willing, take this cup from Me, but not My will, but Yours be done.”

43 Then an angel from heaven appeared to Him and strengthened Him.

44 Being in deep anguish, He prayed more intensely, and His sweat became like drops of blood falling to the ground.

45 When He got up from prayer and went back to the disciples, He found them sleeping, worn out from sorrow.

46 He said, “Why are you sleeping, Get up and pray so you will not fall into temptation.”

Jesus Arrested

47 While He was still speaking, a crowd showed up, led by Judas, one of the twelve. He came close to Jesus to kiss Him.

48 Jesus said, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”

49 When those around Him saw what was happening, they said, “Lord, should we strike with our swords?”

50 One of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear.

51 But Jesus said, “Enough of this!” And He touched the man’s ear and healed him.

52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, temple officers, and elders who came for Him, “Am I leading a rebellion that you come out with swords and clubs,

53 Every day I was with you in the temple courts, and you did not lay a hand on Me. But this is your hour, when darkness rules.”

Peter Denies Jesus

54 They seized Him, led Him away, and took Him into the high priest’s house. Peter followed at a distance.

55 When they lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat among them.

56 A servant girl saw him sitting there in the firelight. She looked closely and said, “This man was with Him.”

57 But he denied it, saying, “Woman, I do not know Him.”

58 A little later someone else saw him and said, “You are one of them too.” Peter said, “Man, I am not!”

59 About an hour later, another person insisted, “For sure this man was with Him, he is a Galilean.”

60 Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are talking about!” Immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed.

61 The Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered what the Lord had said: “Before the rooster crows today, you will deny Me three times.”

62 And he went outside and broke down crying.

The Soldiers Mock Jesus

63 The men guarding Jesus started mocking and beating Him.

64 They blindfolded Him and kept asking, “Prophesy, who hit You?”

65 And they said many other things against Him, insulting Him.

Jesus Before the Council

66 At daybreak, the council of elders of the people met together, both chief priests and scribes, and they brought Him before their council.

67 They said, “If You are the Christ, tell us.” He answered, “If I tell you, you will not believe Me.

68 And if I ask you, you will not answer.

69 But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.”

70 They all asked, “Are You then the Son of God?” He said to them, “You say that I am.”

71 Then they said, “Why do we need any more testimony, We have heard it from His own mouth.”
