Luke 10

Jesus Sends Out the Seventy-two

1 After this, the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them out two by two ahead of Him into every town and place He was about to go.

2 He told them, “The harvest is big, but the workers are few. So pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest.

3 Go, but understand this, I am sending you out like lambs in the middle of wolves.

4 Do not carry a money bag, a travel bag, or extra sandals. Do not stop to greet people along the way.

5 When you enter a house, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’

6 If a person of peace is there, your peace will rest on them. If not, it will come back to you.

7 Stay in that house, eating and drinking what they give you, because the worker deserves their wages. Do not keep bouncing from house to house.

8 When you enter a town and they welcome you, eat what is set before you.

9 Heal the sick there and tell them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’

10 But if you enter a town and they do not welcome you, go out into the streets and say,

11 ‘Even the dust of your town that sticks to our feet, we wipe it off as a warning to you. But know this, the kingdom of God has come near.’

12 I am telling you, it will be more bearable for Sodom on that day than for that town.”

Woe to Unrepentant Cities

13 “Woe to you, Chorazin. Woe to you, Bethsaida. If the miracles done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.

14 But it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon at judgment than for you.

15 And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted up to heaven, No, you will be brought down to Hades.

16 Whoever listens to you listens to Me. Whoever rejects you rejects Me. And whoever rejects Me rejects the One who sent Me.”

The Return of the Seventy-two

17 The seventy-two came back excited, saying, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in Your name!”

18 He said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.

19 Look, I have given you authority to step on snakes and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy, nothing will harm you.

20 But do not get hype over spirits submitting to you, be glad that your names are written in heaven.”

21 In that moment, Jesus was full of joy through the Holy Spirit and said, “I praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because You have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to those who are like children. Yes, Father, this is how You were pleased to do it.

22 Everything has been handed over to Me by My Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and no one knows who the Father is except the Son, and those the Son chooses to reveal Him to.”

23 Then He turned to His disciples privately and said, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see.

24 I am telling you, many prophets and kings wanted to see what you are seeing but did not see it, and to hear what you are hearing but did not hear it.”

The Parable of the Good Samaritan

25 A legal expert stood up to test Him, saying, “Teacher, what do I need to do to inherit eternal life?”

26 Jesus said, “What is written in the Law, How do you read it?”

27 He answered, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, strength, and mind, and love your neighbor as yourself.”

28 Jesus said, “You answered right. Do this and you will live.”

29 But the man, wanting to justify himself, said, “And who is my neighbor?”

30 Jesus replied, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho and got jumped by robbers. They stripped him, beat him down, and left him half dead.

31 A priest happened to be going that way. When he saw the man, he crossed to the other side and kept it moving.

32 Same with a Levite, he came by, saw him, and kept going.

33 But a Samaritan, someone people usually looked down on, came by. When he saw the man, he had compassion.

34 He went to him, cleaned his wounds with oil and wine, wrapped them up, put him on his own animal, and took him to an inn to take care of him.

35 The next day, he gave the innkeeper money and said, ‘Take care of him. Whatever more you spend, I will pay you back when I come through again.’

36 So which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who got attacked?”

37 He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” Jesus said, “Go and do the same.”

Jesus Visits Martha and Mary

38 As they were traveling, Jesus entered a village, and a woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house.

39 She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what He was saying.

40 But Martha was distracted, trying to handle all the serving. She came up and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister left me to do all the work by myself, Tell her to help me.”

41 Jesus answered, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and stressed about a lot of things.

42 But only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken from her.”
