John 2

Read John 2 in clear, relatable modern language.

Water Into Wine

On the third day, there was a wedding going down in Cana of Galilee, and Jesus’ mother was there.

Jesus and His disciples got invited too.

The wine ran out, and His mother came to Him like, “They do not have any wine.”

Jesus said, “Woman, why are you bringing this to Me, My time has not come yet.”

His mother turned to the servants and said, “Whatever He tells you, just do it.”

There were six big stone water jars sitting there, used for the Jewish purification rituals, each one holding a lot of water.

Jesus told the servants, “Fill those jars up with water.” So they filled them all the way to the top.

Then He said, “Now draw some out and take it to the head waiter.” So they did.

When the head waiter tasted it, he did not know where it came from, but the servants knew. And that water had turned into wine. He called the groom over

and said, “Everybody else puts out the good wine first, and after people done had a lot, they bring out the cheap stuff. But you saved the best for last.”

This was the first sign Jesus did, out in Cana of Galilee, showing His glory, and His disciples started really believing in Him.

A Short Stay in Capernaum

After that, He went down to Capernaum with His mother, His brothers, and His disciples, but they did not stay there long.

Jesus Cleans Out the Temple

The Passover of the Jews was near, so Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

He walked into the temple and saw people selling oxen, sheep, doves, and money changers sitting there making deals.

He made a whip out of cords and started driving all of them out, animals and all. He flipped the tables of the money changers and scattered their coins everywhere.

He told the ones selling doves, “Get this stuff out of here. Stop turning My Father’s house into a business.”

His disciples remembered what was written: “Zeal for Your house will consume me.”

The Jews responded, “What sign you are going to show us to prove You got authority to do this?”

Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”

They said, “It took 46 years to build this temple, and You are going to raise it up in three days?”

But He was talking about the temple of His body.

So when He rose from the dead, His disciples remembered this, and they believed the Scripture and what Jesus had said.

Jesus Knows What Is Really in People

While He was in Jerusalem during the Passover, a lot of people believed in His name when they saw the signs He was doing.

But Jesus did not fully trust Himself to them, because He knew what was in people.

He did not need anybody to tell Him about mankind, because He already knew what was in the heart of every person.
