Job 37

Read Job 37 in clear, relatable modern language.

God’s Voice in the Thunder

“At this my heart pounds and leaps out my chest.

Listen, listen to the roar of His voice, the rumble that comes from His mouth.

He lets it loose under the whole sky, His lightning reaching the ends of the earth.

After it, a voice roars; He thunders with His majestic voice. When His voice sounds, He holds nothing back.

God’s voice thunders in marvelous ways; He does great things we cannot even understand.”

God’s Control Over Weather

“He tells the snow, ‘Fall on the earth,’ and the rain shower, ‘Pour down hard.’

He stops everyone is work with His hand so all people know what He is doing.

The animals go into their dens, stay in their lairs.

The storm comes outta its chamber, cold from the driving winds.

The breath of God makes ice, the broad waters freeze solid.

He loads the clouds with moisture, scatters His lightning through them.

They swirl around by His direction, doing whatever He commands on the face of the earth.

He brings the clouds either as correction for people, or to water His earth, or to show His love.”

Elihu Calls Job to Consider God’s Works

“Job, listen to this: stand still and consider God’s wonders.

Do you know how God controls the clouds, how He makes lightning flash from them,

Do you know how the clouds hang poised, those wonders of Him whose knowledge is perfect,

You, whose clothes get hot when the land lies still under the south wind.

Can you spread out the skies like Him, hard as a mirror of cast bronze,

We Cannot Understand God’s Greatness

Tell us what we should say to Him; we cannot put our case together because we are in the dark.

Should He be told I want to speak, Would anyone ask to be swallowed up,

Now no one can look at the sun, bright as it is in the sky after the wind sweeps them clean.

Out of the north comes golden splendor; God’s surrounded by awesome majesty.

The Almighty, we cannot find Him out; He has exalted in power, full of justice and great righteousness, He will not oppress.

So people fear Him; He respects no one who thinks they wise in their own mind.”
