Habakkuk 3

Read Habakkuk 3 in clear, relatable modern language.

Habakkuk’s Prayer

1 A prayer of Habakkuk the prophet, according to Shigionoth.

2 LORD, I heard the report about You and I stand in awe of Your work. In the middle of the years bring it back to life, in the middle of the years make it known. In wrath remember mercy.

The Lord’s Power Revealed

3 God comes from Teman, the Holy One from Mount Paran. His splendor covers the heavens, and the earth is full of His praise.

4 His brightness is like sunlight, rays flash from His hand, and there His power is hidden.

5 Plague goes before Him, and pestilence follows in His steps.

6 He stands and shakes the earth. He looks and makes nations tremble. The ancient mountains crumble and the old hills collapse. His ways are eternal.

7 I saw the tents of Cushan in trouble, the tent curtains of Midian shaking.

8 Was Your anger against the rivers, LORD, Was Your wrath against the streams or Your fury against the sea when You rode on Your horses, on Your chariots of salvation,

9 You uncovered Your bow, You called for many arrows. You split the earth with rivers.

10 The mountains saw You and writhed. Floodwaters swept by. The deep roared and lifted its hands high.

11 Sun and moon stood still in the sky at the light of Your flying arrows, at the flash of Your shining spear.

12 In fury You marched across the land, in anger You trampled the nations.

13 You went out to save Your people, to save Your anointed. You crushed the head of the house of the wicked, laying him bare from foundation to neck.

14 With his own spear You pierced his leaders’ heads when they stormed out to scatter us, rejoicing as if about to devour the poor in secret.

15 You trampled the sea with Your horses, stirring up the great waters.

Habakkuk’s Faith

16 I heard and my body trembled. My lips quivered at the sound. Decay entered my bones, and my legs shook beneath me. Yet I will wait quietly for the day of trouble to come on the people who invade us.

17 Though the fig tree does not bud and there is no fruit on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though the flock is cut off from the fold and there is no cattle in the stalls,

18 yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will be joyful in the God of my salvation.

19 The Lord GOD is my strength. He makes my feet like a deer’s and lets me walk on high places.
