Esau’s Family

1 This is the story of Esau, who is also known as Edom.

2 Esau married Canaanite women: Adah (the daughter of Elon the Hittite), Oholibamah (the daughter of Anah and granddaughter of Zibeon the Hivite),

3 and Basemath (the daughter of Ishmael and sister of Nebaioth).

4 Adah gave Esau a son named Eliphaz. Basemath had Reuel,

5 and Oholibamah had Jeush, Jalam, and Korah. These are Esau’s sons who were born in Canaan.

Esau Moves to Seir

6 Esau took his wives, kids, servants, livestock, and all his stuff and moved away from his brother Jacob.

7 The land they were living in could not support both their flocks and herds, so they had to separate.

8 Esau settled in the hill country of Seir, and that is how he became known as Edom.

Esau’s Descendants

9 This is the story of Esau’s family, who lived in Seir.

10 Esau’s sons were Eliphaz (by Adah) and Reuel (by Basemath).

11 Eliphaz’s sons were Teman, Omar, Zepho, Gatam, and Kenaz.

12 Eliphaz also had a son named Amalek through his concubine Timna. These were Adah’s descendants.

13 Reuel’s sons were Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah. These were Basemath’s descendants.

14 Oholibamah’s sons were Jeush, Jalam, and Korah. These came from Esau’s wife, the daughter of Anah.

The Chiefs of Esau’s Descendants

15 These are the chiefs from Esau’s descendants: Eliphaz’s sons, Teman, Omar, Zepho, Kenaz,

16 Korah, Gatam, and Amalek. These were the chiefs of Eliphaz in Edom, all descendants of Adah.

17 Reuel’s sons, Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah. These were the chiefs of Reuel in Edom, all descendants of Basemath.

18 Oholibamah’s sons, Jeush, Jalam, and Korah. These were the chiefs of Oholibamah, Esau’s wife.

19 All these were the chiefs of Esau (aka Edom).

The People of Seir

20 These are the sons of Seir the Horite, who lived in the land: Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah,

21 Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan. These were the Horite chiefs in Seir.

22 Lotan’s sons were Hori and Hemam, and his sister was Timna.

23 Shobal’s sons were Alvan, Manahath, Ebal, Shepho, and Onam.

24 Zibeon had two sons, Aiah and Anah. This Anah discovered some hot springs while taking care of his dad’s donkeys.

25 Anah’s kids were Dishon and Oholibamah (his daughter).

26 Dishon’s sons were Hemdan, Eshban, Ithran, and Keran.

27 Ezer’s sons were Bilhan, Zaavan, and Akan.

28 Dishan’s sons were Uz and Aran.

The Chiefs of the Horites

29 These were the chiefs of the Horites: Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah,

30 Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan. These were the chiefs of the Horites in Seir.

The Kings of Edom

31 These are the kings who ruled in Edom before Israel had kings:

32 Bela, son of Beor, ruled in Edom, and his city was Dinhabah.

33 When Bela died, Jobab, son of Zerah from Bozrah, took over.

34 When Jobab died, Husham from the land of the Temanites became king.

35 When Husham died, Hadad, son of Bedad, who defeated Midian in Moab, became king. His city was Avith.

36 When Hadad died, Samlah from Masrekah became king.

37 When Samlah died, Shaul from Rehoboth on the river became king.

38 When Shaul died, Baal-Hanan, son of Akbor, became king.

39 When Baal-Hanan died, Hadad became king. His city was Pau, and his wife was Mehetabel, daughter of Matred and granddaughter of Mezahab.

Esau’s Chiefs

40 These are Esau’s chiefs by name: Timna, Alvah, Jetheth,

41 Oholibamah, Elah, Pinon,

42 Kenaz, Teman, Mibzar,

43 Magdiel, and Iram. These were the chiefs of Edom, ruling in the land they possessed. Esau was the father of the Edomites.
