Genesis 25

Abraham’s Other Kids

1 Abraham got married again after Sarah passed. His new wife’s name was Keturah.

2 She gave him sons: Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah.

3 Jokshan’s sons were Sheba and Dedan. Dedan’s descendants became the Ashurites, Letushites, and Leummites.

4 Midian’s sons were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida, and Eldaah. These were Keturah’s kids.

Abraham’s Inheritance

5 Abraham left everything he owned to Isaac.

6 But he gave gifts to his other sons from Keturah and sent them away to the east, far from Isaac.

Abraham’s Death

7 Abraham lived 175 years.

8 He died at a good old age, satisfied with life, and joined his ancestors.

9 His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah, next to Sarah, his wife.

10 Abraham had bought that field from the Hittites, and that is where he was buried.

11 After Abraham’s death, God blessed Isaac, who lived near Beer Lahai Roi.

Ishmael’s Descendants

12 This is the family line of Ishmael, Abraham’s son with Hagar, Sarah’s servant.

13 Ishmael’s sons were: Nebaioth (his firstborn), Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam,

14 Mishma, Dumah, Massa,

15 Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah.

16 These twelve sons became tribal leaders of their own clans.

17 Ishmael lived 137 years before he passed and joined his ancestors.

18 His descendants lived from Havilah to Shur, near Egypt. They stayed beefing with everyone around them.

The Birth of Jacob and Esau

19 This is the family line of Isaac, Abraham’s son. Abraham was the father of Isaac.

20 Isaac was 40 years old when he married Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel and sister of Laban from Paddan Aram.

21 Rebekah could not have kids, so Isaac prayed to the Lord for her. The Lord answered, and she got pregnant.

22 But the twins were beefing inside her, so she asked, ‘Lord, what is going on with me,’

23 The Lord told her, ‘Two nations are inside you. They will be rivals, and the older will serve the younger.’

24 When it was time to deliver, she had twin boys.

25 The first came out red and hairy, so they named him Esau.

26 Then his brother came out, holding Esau’s heel. They named him Jacob. Isaac was 60 when they were born.

Esau Sells His Birthright

27 As the boys grew up, Esau became a wild hunter, while Jacob was more of a chill homebody.

28 Isaac loved Esau because he brought home wild game, but Rebekah loved Jacob.

29 One day, Jacob was cooking stew when Esau came in from the field, starving.

30 Esau said, ‘Listen, let me have some of that red stew. I am dying here!’ That is why they called him Edom (which means ‘red’).

31 Jacob said, ‘First, sell me your birthright.’

32 Esau said, ‘Man, I am about to die! What good is a birthright to me,’

33 Jacob said, ‘Swear to me first.’ So Esau swore and sold his birthright to Jacob.

34 Then Jacob gave Esau some bread and stew. Esau ate, drank, and bounced, not even caring about his birthright.
