Ezekiel 28

The Prince of Tyre Rebuked

1 The word of the LORD came to me, saying,

2 “Son of man, say to the prince of Tyre, ‘This is what the Lord GOD says: Because your heart is proud and you say, “I am a god; I sit in the seat of gods in the heart of the seas,” yet you are a man and not a god, though you think you are as wise as a god.

3 Look, you are wiser than Daniel; no secret is hidden from you.

4 By your wisdom and understanding you gained wealth for yourself. You gathered gold and silver into your treasuries.

5 By your great skill in trading you increased your wealth, and your heart grew proud because of it.

6 Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: Because you think you are as wise as a god,

7 look, I am bringing foreigners against you, the most ruthless of nations. They will draw their swords against your beautiful wisdom and pierce your splendor.

8 They will bring you down to the pit, and you will die a violent death in the heart of the seas.

9 Will you still say, “I am a god,” in front of the one killing you, You will be a man, not a god, in the hand of the one who pierces you.

10 You will die the death of the uncircumcised at the hands of foreigners. For I have spoken,’ declares the Lord GOD.”

A Lament for the King of Tyre

11 Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

12 “Son of man, take up a lament over the king of Tyre and say to him, ‘This is what the Lord GOD says: You were the seal of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.

13 You were in Eden, the garden of God. Every precious stone covered you, ruby, topaz, diamond, beryl, onyx, jasper, sapphire, turquoise, and emerald. Gold work was crafted for your settings and mountings on the day you were created.

14 You were an anointed guardian cherub. I placed you there. You were on the holy mountain of God. You walked among the stones of fire.

15 You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created until unrighteousness was found in you.

16 By the abundance of your trading you were filled with violence, and you sinned. So I expelled you in disgrace from the mountain of God, and I banished you, guardian cherub, from among the stones of fire.

17 Your heart grew proud because of your beauty. You corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor. I threw you to the ground; I put you on display before kings, so they could stare at you.

18 By the greatness of your sins and dishonest trading you profaned your sanctuaries. So I brought fire out from within you; it consumed you, and I turned you to ashes on the ground in the sight of everyone watching.

19 All who know you among the peoples are appalled at you. You have become a horror, and you will be no more forever.’”

Judgment on Sidon

20 The word of the LORD came to me, saying,

21 “Son of man, turn your face toward Sidon and prophesy against her.

22 Say, ‘This is what the Lord GOD says: Look, I am against you, Sidon, and I will show My glory within you. They will know that I am the LORD when I carry out judgments against her and show Myself holy through her.

23 I will send plague into her and blood into her streets. The slain will fall within her by the sword against her on every side. Then they will know that I am the LORD.

24 The house of Israel will no longer have a painful thorn or a sharp briar from any of the neighbors who treated them with contempt. Then they will know that I am the Lord GOD.

Israel Restored in Safety

25 “This is what the Lord GOD says: When I gather the house of Israel from the peoples where they were scattered, I will show Myself holy among them in the sight of the nations. Then they will live in their own land, which I gave to My servant Jacob.

26 They will live there securely. They will build houses and plant vineyards. They will live securely when I carry out judgments against all their neighbors who treated them with contempt. Then they will know that I am the LORD their God.”
