Exodus 2

Moses Is Born and Protected

1 So this dude from the tribe of Levi hooked up with a woman from the same tribe, and they got married.

2 She got pregnant and had a baby boy. When she saw how fly and healthy he was, she decided to keep him on the low for three months.

3 But when she could not hide him anymore, she got creative, she made a little basket out of papyrus, sealed it with tar and pitch, put the baby inside, and floated it in the reeds by the Nile River.

4 His big sis was posted nearby, keeping an eye out to see what would happen to him.

Pharaoh’s Daughter Finds Moses

5 Pharaoh’s daughter came down to the Nile to take a bath, and her squad was walking along the bank. She spotted the basket in the reeds and told one of her girls to go grab it.

6 When she opened the basket, there was the baby crying. She felt sorry for him and said, ‘This must be one of those Hebrew kids.’

7 Then the baby’s sister rolled up and said, ‘Hey, you need me to find a Hebrew woman to nurse the baby for you,’

8 Pharaoh’s daughter said, ‘Yeah, do that.’ So the girl went and got the baby’s mom.

9 Pharaoh’s daughter told the mom, ‘Take care of this baby for me, and I will pay you.’ So the mom took her son back home and nursed him.

10 When the baby grew up a little, his mom brought him back to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. She named him Moses, saying, ‘I pulled him out of the water.’

Moses Defends His People

11 Years later, Moses grew up and went out to see his people, the Hebrews. He saw how bad they were getting treated and noticed an Egyptian beating one of his people.

12 Moses looked around to make sure nobody was watching, then he handled the Egyptian, killed him, and hid his body in the sand.

13 The next day, Moses saw two Hebrews beefing. He stepped in and said to the one in the wrong, ‘Listen, why are you hitting your own brother,’

14 The dude snapped back, ‘Who put you in charge of us, You are going to kill me like you killed that Egyptian yesterday?’ Moses realized the word was out and got shook.

15 When Pharaoh heard what went down, he tried to kill Moses, but Moses dipped and ran to Midian. He sat down by a well to figure out his next move.

Moses Helps the Daughters of Midian

16 There was a priest in Midian who had seven daughters. They came to the well to draw water for their dad’s sheep.

17 But some dusty shepherds came through and tried to bully them. Moses was not having it, he stepped in, handled the situation, and helped them water their flock.

18 When the girls got home early, their dad, Reuel, was like, ‘You all back already, What happened,’

19 They said, ‘An Egyptian dude helped us out big time. He even drew water for us and watered the flock.’

20 Reuel said, ‘Where is he, Why did you leave him there, Go back and invite him to eat with us!’

21 Moses ended up chilling with Reuel, and before long, Reuel gave his daughter Zipporah to Moses as a wife.

22 They had a son, and Moses named him Gershom, saying, ‘Man, I am a stranger in a foreign land.’

God Hears Israel’s Cry

23 Back in Egypt, the Pharaoh died, but the Israelites were still stuck in slavery, crying out for help. Their cries hit heaven.

24 God heard their groaning and remembered the promise He made to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

25 God looked at what His people were going through and said, ‘I am about to handle this.’
