Exodus 15

The Song of Moses and the Israelites

1 Then Moses and the Israelites broke into a song, praising the Lord: ‘The Lord is my strength and my jam. He just threw Pharaoh’s whole army into the sea!’

2 ‘He is my God, and I am going to praise Him; my ancestors’ God, and I am lifting Him up.’

3 ‘The Lord is a warrior, yeah, that is His name!’

4 ‘Pharaoh’s chariots and his whole squad, The Lord threw them into the sea. His top officers, Gone, drowned in the Red Sea.’

5 ‘The deep waters covered them; they sank like a rock.’

6 ‘Your right hand, Lord, is strong and powerful. Your right hand smashes the enemy.’

7 ‘In Your power, You wiped them out. You unleashed Your wrath, and it burned them up like dry grass.’

8 ‘At Your breath, the waters stacked up like walls. The waves froze in place.’

9 ‘The enemy said, We got them now! Let us chase them, catch them, and take their stuff!’

10 ‘But You blew Your wind, and the sea came crashing down. They sank like lead in the mighty waters.’

11 ‘Who is like You, Lord, Nobody. You are holy, awesome, and do wonders!’

12 ‘You stretched out Your hand, and the earth swallowed them.’

13 ‘You guided the people You saved with Your love and power, leading them to Your holy place.’

14 ‘The nations are shook. The Philistines are straight-up terrified.’

15 ‘The chiefs of Edom are trembling, and the leaders of Moab are weak with fear. The people of Canaan, Straight-up fainting.’

16 ‘Your power has them frozen with fear, Lord. Your people are crossing through until they reach the land You promised.’

17 ‘You are bringing them in and planting them on Your holy mountain, the place You made for Your home, Lord.’

18 ‘The Lord will rule forever and ever!’

The Lord Destroys Pharaoh’s Army

19 When Pharaoh’s horses, chariots, and riders went into the sea, the Lord brought the waters crashing down on them. But the Israelites walked on dry ground through the sea.

Miriam Leads the Women

20 Miriam, Moses’ sister, grabbed a tambourine, and all the women followed her with tambourines, dancing.

21 Miriam sang back to them: ‘Sing to the Lord! He has thrown the horse and rider into the sea!’

Bitter Water Made Sweet

22 Moses led the Israelites away from the Red Sea, and they went into the Desert of Shur. For three days, they walked without finding water.

23 When they got to Marah, they could not drink the water because it was bitter. That is why it was called Marah (which means ‘bitter’).

24 The people started whining to Moses, ‘What are we supposed to drink?’

25 Moses cried out to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a piece of wood. Moses threw it into the water, and the water turned sweet.

26 The Lord said, ‘If you all listen carefully to Me and do what is right, obeying My commands, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on Egypt. I am the Lord who heals you.’

The Oasis at Elim

27 Then they came to Elim, where there were 12 springs of water and 70 palm trees. They camped there by the water and chilled.
