Ecclesiastes 11

Read Ecclesiastes 11 in clear, relatable modern language.

Cast Your Bread Upon the Waters

1 Ship out your bread on the waters, after many days you will see a return.

2 Invest in seven ventures, even eight, you do not know what disaster may hit the land.

3 If clouds full of rain, they pour it out; if a tree falls south or north, it stays where it fell.

4 Whoever watches the wind will not plant; whoever watches the clouds will not reap.

5 Just like you cannot understand how the spirit enters a baby in the womb, you cannot understand God’s work from start to finish.

6 Plant your seed in the morning, do not be idle at night, you do not know which one will succeed, or maybe both.

Enjoy Life While You Can

7 Light sweet, and it feels good to see the sun.

8 People should enjoy every year of life, but remember, many dark days coming. Everything after this meaningless.

9 Rejoice, young man, while you are young; let your heart be glad and walk where it leads, but remember, God will bring you into judgment for all these things.

10 So remove sorrow from your heart and stay clear of evil, because youth and strength are fleeting like smoke.
