Urban Word Bible
Deuteronomy 25
Read Deuteronomy 25 in clear, relatable modern language.
Court Justice, Keep It Fair
1 If two people get into it and end up in court, The judges must figure out who is right and who is wrong, then handle it.
2 If the guilty one must get whipped, The judge makes him lie down and get it in front of everyone.
3 They can give him up to 40 lashes, no more. Do not go past that or you will humiliate the man like he is not human.
Let the Worker Eat
4 Do not muzzle an ox while it is working the field. Let it eat while it grinds. (Translation: Do not block people from eating when are they earning it.)
Take Care of Your Brother’s Legacy
5 If brothers live close and one dies without kids, The widow cannot marry some outsider. His brother must marry her and raise up a child in the dead man’s name.
6 The first son she has will carry the dead brother’s name, So his name do not disappear from Israel.
7 If the man does not want to marry his brother’s widow, She takes it to the elders at the gate.
8 The elders talk to the man, And if he still refuses,
9 The widow takes his sandal off, spits in his face, and says, “This what happens to the man who will not keep his brother’s name alive.”
10 Then his people call him “The Barefoot Man.” (In other words, his name got shame on it.)
Do Not Fight Dirty
11 If two men are throwing hands and the wife of one jumps in And grabs the other man’s privates to help her man out.
12 You must cut off her hand. No pity. (God does not play with dishonorable moves.)
Keep Business Honest
13 Do not carry two different sets of weights in your bag, A heavy one and a light one.
14 Do not have two different sizes of measures in your house, One big, one small.
15 Use honest weights and fair scales, So you can live long and blessed in the land God is giving you.
16 God hates cheaters and scammers who play dirty in business.
Do Not Forget What Amalek Did
17 Remember what Amalek did to you when you all came outta Egypt.
18 He snuck up on you all from the back, Attacking the weak and tired ones who lagged behind, He is not fear God at all.
19 So when God gives you rest from all your enemies, And you are chilling in the land He promised, Wipe Amalek off the map. Do not forget.
