Deuteronomy 18

Read Deuteronomy 18 in clear, relatable modern language.

Levites Got No Land, God Is Their Portion

1 The Levite priests and the whole tribe of Levi will not get land like the rest of you all. God is their inheritance, they eat from the offerings made to the Lord.

2 They do not get any share of land like the others, because the Lord is their piece of the pie, just like He said.

What the Levites Can Receive

3 Here is what the priests get from the people’s sacrifices: the shoulder, cheeks, and stomach from the cattle or sheep.

4 They also get the first fruits, your grain, wine, oil, and the first of your wool when you shear your sheep.

5 The Lord picked the Levites to stand before Him and serve, to bless in His name. That is their calling for life.

6 If a Levite moves from one town in Israel to the place the Lord chooses and comes with all his heart to serve.

7 Then he can serve just like the Levites already there, standing before the Lord.

8 And even though he left his hometown, he still gets equal portions of the offerings, besides anything he might have earned on his own.

Do Not Play with Witchcraft or Dark Stuff

9 When you get into the land the Lord is giving you, do not be picking up them wicked ways from the folks already there.

10 Do not sacrifice your kids, do not mess with sorcery, spells, fortune-telling, or witchcraft.

11 Do not talk to spirits, do not be summoning the dead, God does not mess with that.

12 Anybody who does that stuff is straight up disgusting to God. That is why He is kicking those nations out, they dirty.

13 You need to be solid and loyal to the Lord your God. Nothing shady. Nothing crooked.

Other Nations Listen to Sorcery, Not You

14 Them other nations you taking over, Yeah, they listen to fortune-tellers and spirit talkers. But God said, “Not you.” You got Me.

God Is Going to Send a Real Prophet

15 The Lord your God is going to raise up a Prophet from among your people, just like me (Moses). You better listen to Him.

16 This is what you all asked for at Mount Sinai: “We cannot hear God’s voice anymore, or we will die.”

17 And the Lord said, “They are right to be shook.”

18 So God said, “I will send them a Prophet, one of their own, like Moses. I will put My words in his mouth, and he is going to speak what I say.”

19 And if anybody do not listen to what My Prophet says in My name, I will handle them personally.

How to Spot a Fake Prophet

20 But if a prophet talks wild in God’s name, saying stuff God is not tell them, or speaks for other gods, They must die.

21 You might say, “But how we supposed to know if it is really from God or not?”

22 If the prophet says something and it does not happen or do not come true, that is not from God. They were talking out they neck. Do not be scared of them.
