Amos 2

Read Amos 2 in clear, relatable modern language.

Judgment on Moab

1 This is what the LORD says: “For three crimes of Moab, even four, I will not hold back judgment. They burned the bones of the king of Edom into lime.

2 I will send fire on Moab, and it will burn up the strongholds of Kerioth. Moab will die in chaos, with shouting and trumpet blasts.

3 I will wipe out the ruler from among them and kill all his officials with him,” says the LORD.

Judgment on Judah

4 This is what the LORD says: “For three crimes of Judah, even four, I will not hold back judgment. They rejected the law of the LORD and did not keep His commands. They were led astray by lies, the same lies their ancestors followed.

5 I will send fire on Judah, and it will burn up the strongholds of Jerusalem.”

Judgment on Israel

6 This is what the LORD says: “For three crimes of Israel, even four, I will not hold back judgment. They sell the righteous for silver and the poor for a pair of sandals.

7 They trample the heads of the poor into the dust and block the path of the oppressed. A man and his father sleep with the same woman and dishonor My holy name.

8 They lie down beside every altar on clothes taken as collateral, and in the house of their god they drink wine bought with fines.

9 Yet I destroyed the Amorites in front of them, tall like cedars and strong like oaks. I wiped out their fruit above and their roots below.

10 I brought you up from the land of Egypt and led you forty years in the wilderness to take over the land of the Amorites.

11 I raised up some of your sons as prophets and some of your young men as Nazirites. Is not this true, people of Israel,” says the LORD.

12 “But you made the Nazirites drink wine and ordered the prophets, ‘Do not prophesy.’

13 Look, I am about to crush you like a wagon loaded down with grain.

14 The fast runner will not escape, the strong will not keep his strength, and the warrior will not save his life.

15 The archer will not stand his ground, the swift runner will not get away, and the one riding a horse will not save himself.

16 Even the bravest soldier will run away naked on that day,” says the LORD.
