2 Samuel 9

David Shows Love to Jonathan’s Son

1 David said, “Is there anybody left from Saul’s family that I can bless for Jonathan’s sake?”

2 There was a servant from Saul’s house named Ziba. They brought him to David. The king asked, “You Ziba,” He said, “Yeah, that is me.”

3 David said, “Is there anybody left from Saul’s line that I can show God’s kindness to?” Ziba said, “Yeah, Jonathan got a son, he has crippled in both feet.”

4 David asked, “Where is he at?” Ziba said, “He is staying at the house of Machir son of Ammiel, in Lo-debar.”

5 So King David sent for him and brought him out from Lo-debar.

Face to Face with the King

6 When Mephibosheth, Jonathan’s son and Saul’s grandson, came in, he bowed low before David. David said, “Mephibosheth!” He said, “I am here, your servant.”

7 David said, “Do not be scared. I am showing you love for your father Jonathan. I am going to give you back all the land that belonged to your granddaddy Saul. And you are going to eat at my table like family, every day.”

8 Mephibosheth bowed again and said, “Who am I that you would care about someone like me, a dead dog?”

David Makes It Official

9 Then the king called Ziba, Saul’s old servant. He said, “I am giving everything that belonged to Saul and his fam to Mephibosheth.”

10 “You and your sons and servants are going to farm the land, bring in the crops, and make sure the household eats. But Mephibosheth, He will eat at my table like one of my sons.”

11 Ziba said, “Yes sir. I am going to do everything you said.” From then on, Mephibosheth ate at David’s table like royalty.

12 He had a young son named Mica. All the people in Ziba’s house became Mephibosheth’s servants.

13 And Mephibosheth, though he was crippled in both feet, lived in Jerusalem and ate at the king’s table daily.
