Gatekeepers & Treasurers: Locking Down God’s House

1 As for the divisions of the gatekeepers: From the Korahites, Meshelemiah son of Kore, from the sons of Asaph.

2 Meshelemiah had sons: Zechariah the firstborn, Jediael the second, Zebadiah the third, Jathniel the fourth,

3 Elam the fifth, Jehohanan the sixth, Eliehoenai the seventh.

4 Obed-Edom had sons: Shemaiah the firstborn (because God had blessed him), Jehozabad the second, Joah the third, Sacar the fourth, Nethanel the fifth,

5 Ammiel the sixth, Issachar the seventh, Peullethai the eighth. Because God had blessed him.

6 To his son Shemaiah, sons were born who were leaders in their families, because they were mighty, strong dudes.

7 The sons of Shemaiah: Othni, Rephael, Obed, and Elzabad, with his brothers Elihu and Semachiah, strong men.

8 All these were from the sons of Obed-Edom. They, their sons, and their relatives were strong, capable men for service, sixty-two from Obed-Edom.

9 Meshelemiah had sons and relatives, strong men, eighteen.

10 Hosah, from the sons of Merari, had sons: Shimri the chief (though he was not the firstborn, his pops made him chief),

11 Hilkiah the second, Tebaliah the third, Zechariah the fourth. All the sons and relatives of Hosah were thirteen.

12 To these divisions of the gatekeepers, the chiefs of the men, were given specific duties, guarding the Lord’s temple, just like their relatives.

13 They cast lots for each gate, for small and great, for every gate.

14 The lot for the East Gate fell to Shelemiah. Then they cast lots for his son Zechariah, a wise counselor, and his lot came out for the North Gate.

15 Obed-Edom got the South Gate, and his sons got the storehouses.

16 For the West Gate and the Shallecheth Gate on the highway leading up, there were guards opposite each other.

17 Six Levites were on the East side, four on the North side daily, four on the South side daily, and two at the storehouses.

18 At the Parbar (West side), four at the highway and two at the Parbar itself.

19 These were the divisions of the gatekeepers from the sons of Korah and Merari.

Treasurers and Administrators

20 From the Levites, Ahijah was in charge of the treasuries of God’s temple and the treasuries of the holy things.

21 The sons of Ladan, the sons of the Gershonites from Ladan, were the heads of families of Ladan the Gershonite: Jehiel.

22 The sons of Jehiel: Zetham and his brother Joel. They were in charge of the treasuries of the Lord’s temple.

23 From the Amramites, Izharites, Hebronites, and Uzzielites:

24 Shebuel son of Gershom, son of Moses, was the chief officer over the treasuries.

25 His relatives by Eliezer: his son Rehabiah, his son Jeshaiah, his son Joram, his son Zichri, and his son Shelomith.

26 This Shelomith and his relatives were in charge of all the treasuries of the holy things that King David, the heads of families, the commanders of thousands and hundreds, and the army commanders had dedicated.

27 They had dedicated these from the spoils of war to maintain the Lord’s house.

28 And everything that Samuel the seer, Saul son of Kish, Abner son of Ner, and Joab son of Zeruiah had dedicated, everything dedicated by anyone was under the care of Shelomith and his relatives.

29 From the Izharites, Chenaniah and his sons were for outside duties for Israel, as officers and judges.

30 From the Hebronites, Hashabiah and his relatives, a thousand seven hundred strong men, were in charge of the oversight of Israel west of the Jordan for all the work of the Lord and for the king’s service.

31 From the Hebronites, Jeriah was the chief, according to the records of their families and generations. In the fortieth year of David’s reign, a search was made, and strong, capable men were found among them at Jazer in Gilead.

32 His relatives, strong men, were two thousand seven hundred. King David put them in charge of the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh for all matters of God and for the king.
